We collected TV advertising data (Ad spots) for 8 weeks starting from 1st August 2020. By analyzing the data, we came up with insights into the brands’ preference for language and genres. These are basically defined by the product nature and the target audience each genre has. In the following section of the article, we would see an overview of each of the product categories.

Agriculture product category covers all products and services related to farming and animal husbandry like seeds, animal food, animal healthcare, pesticides, insecticides and other chemicals, water and energy supply products, fertilizers, machinery/equipments, tractors, agri loans and finance, etc.

Agriculture related activities are mostly undertaken in rural areas of India. Hence, advertising in regional channels is preferred by agriculture brands. As seen in the chart above, the top 3 languages for agriculture advertising are:

  1. Hindi (39%): Mostly watched in the Hindi Speaking states of UP, Bihar, MP, Chhattisgarh, and others.
  2. Others (19%): Mostly covers Punjabi, Odiya, Gujarati, Haryanvi, and Rajasthani
  3. Telugu (18%): Covers the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

Agriculture is considered a male-dominated activity where major purchase decisions are taken by the male member of the family. This is one of the reasons news as a genre is preferred by agriculture brands. Another reason of news being the most used genre for agriculture advertising can be the fact that most news channels are Free To Air and are part of DD Dish which is very popular in rural areas. Following are the top 3 genres for agriculture advertising on Television:

  3. GEC & Movies (2% each)

In terms of number of ad spots, the following were the top 5 channels that covered 18% of total agriculture ad spots:

Automobile category covers all types of automobiles- from commercial vehicles to passenger vehicles, two-wheeler as well as four-wheeler and also accessories like batteries, tyres etc.

Unlike agriculture, automobile covers a range of products popular among different target audience. For example, tractors are in heavy demand in rural areas while high-end vehicles are majorly in demand in cities. Also, in terms of pricing, automobiles have a wide price range. For high end cars, English channels claim a considerable share of total advertising. As seen in the chart above, the top 3 languages for automobile advertising are:
